A Shelter Made of Silence
A poem by Al Konda
A universe unfolds when gazes blend,
A pause where breath forgets the way back home.
Across that space, something in me bends,
As if it knows you—not as stranger, known.
No need for words; the moment hums with truth,
A quiet pull that wakes what once was youth.
The world steps back. Its clamor loses hold.
Even time thins out, unsure to stay.
A subtler rhythm—tender edged with bold—
Moves through my chest and will not drift away.
I see myself reflected in your eyes,
Not as I am, but in a truer guise.
Between us hangs a bridge, both slight and sure,
Made only of attention held too long.
It promises no rescue, no grand cure,
Yet steadies me the way a northbound song
Can guide the lost. The heart, without a chart,
Turns cleanly toward you, certain where you are.
It’s more than light that flickers when you smile.
It’s depth—the kind that looks back unafraid.
A sense of being seen, if just a while,
Without the need for armor, mask, or shade.
And here’s the truth I almost didn’t say:
I might be ruined if you turned away.
And in that space, where nothing must be sworn,
A future stirs, unshaped, but warm and near.
Small moments lean toward us, gently born
Of staying still, of choosing not to fear.
The world feels changed—not grand, but finally true,
As if the ground remembered what to do.
So let our glances linger, soft and long—
No vow, no proof, just this shared, steady view.
A shelter made of silence, deep and strong,
Where even breath knows what it’s passing through.
If there is home within this fleeting art,
It’s choosing you—though it may break my heart.
There are moments in life when two people look at one another long enough for something inside them to shift — not loudly, not dramatically, but unmistakably.
A kind of truth rises between them.
A delicate, trembling truth that asks for nothing and reveals everything.
Today’s poem, A Shelter Made of Silence, is born from such a moment.
It begins with a gaze — the kind that suspends the world for a heartbeat.
There’s no declaration, no confession, no choreography of romance.
Just two people standing close enough for honesty to bloom, and quiet enough for vulnerability to breathe.
The poem explores the strange, disarming clarity that comes in the first stillness between two souls.
It asks:
What if love begins not with certainty, but with recognition?
Not with vows, but with attention?
Not with perfection, but with the courage to stay still?
What I found while writing this piece is that intimacy often builds itself from the smallest materials:
-
A look held one second too long.
-
A breath you suddenly realize you’re sharing.
-
The quiet decision not to turn away.
Love, in its truest form, rarely arrives with spectacle.
It comes quietly, like truth walking barefoot.
It touches lightly, and somehow changes everything.
This poem lives in that hush — the place where breath thins, where defenses dissolve, where two people realize that what stands between them is not emptiness, but a bridge.
A bridge made entirely of attention.
A bridge strong enough to hold hope, even if it trembles.
And the final admission — “It’s choosing you, though it may break my heart.” — is not despair.
It is the highest form of courage:
the willingness to love without owning, without knowing, without demanding.
Some shelters are built from stone.
Others from silence.
This one is the latter — and somehow, more enduring.

📚 LITERARY ANALYSIS — A Shelter Made of Silence
By Al Konda
What the poem actually reveals beneath the language
A Shelter Made of Silence is a meditation on the birth of intimacy — not romantic spectacle, but psychological closeness. It portrays the exact threshold where two human beings stop performing and start revealing themselves.
This poem works on three intertwined levels:
1. The Gaze as Catalyst
The opening lines present the gaze not as flirtation, but as revelation.
The gaze is a mirror that does not lie.
It exposes an internal shift before either character understands it consciously.
Here, vision becomes vulnerability.
The poem suggests that love often begins in the eyes long before it reaches the lips.
2. Love as Attention, Not Declaration
The “bridge made only of attention” is one of the poem’s most important metaphors.
It rejects the idea that love is built through:
-
promises
-
labels
-
dramatic gestures
Instead, the poem argues for a quieter architecture:
Love begins when two people are brave enough to remain present in the same unguarded moment.
This is the poem’s thesis.
3. Fear as Proof of Feeling
The admission:
“I might be ruined if you turned away.”
is not emotional dependence — it is honesty.
The poem acknowledges a universal truth:
The depth of potential loss often reflects the depth of authentic connection.
The vulnerability here is deliberate.
It’s a calculated risk, not naivety.
4. The Poetics of Nearness
Throughout the poem, proximity becomes symbolic:
-
breath shared
-
glances lingering
-
the world “stepping back”
Closeness, in this work, is not physical — it is existential.
Two people are no longer observers.
They become participants in one another’s interior lives.
5. The Ending as Emotional Philosophy
The final couplet elevates the poem:
“A shelter made of silence, deep and strong…
If there is home within this fleeting art,
It’s choosing you — though it may break my heart.”
This is not about tragic love.
It is about adult love — the love that understands risk and chooses anyway.
The poem positions love not as a guarantee, but as a moral stance:
To love is not to be certain.
To love is to be willing.

The Mythical Poet (Al Konda) is a Romanian-English poet whose work unites form and fire. He writes in rhyme and symbolism, insisting that poetry must sing, speak, structure, symbolize, strike, and bring joy—the pillars of The Konda Principle, his philosophy of the art. Across 40+ books and countless performances, Al has cultivated a living, multimedia poetry: each poem arrives with a literary analysis, an essay for readers, a song or duet, and visual art bearing his sigil.
His mythic epic The Seer – Deluxe Edition rekindles the ancient vocation of the poet as seer; A Name I Never Spoke and Flame Without Shadow explore love, devotion, and inner transformation; ongoing daily releases blend classical poetics with modern production—YouTube premieres, blog essays, and social dialogues that invite audiences to sing the poem.
Al’s stance is clear: craft is not a cage but a sanctuary; beauty is not a costume but a covenant. In an age of noise and spectacle, The Mythical Poet offers disciplined music, moral clarity, and the courage to turn sorrow into song.
