Judgement

Judgment

By Al Konda

There are poems that attempt to persuade.

There are poems that attempt to wound.

There are poems that attempt to console.

Judgment attempts none of these.

It begins with a simple, uncomfortable premise:

Morning does not ask what I prefer.

Truth arrives independent of preference. The poem does not dramatize revelation. It does not romanticize moral clarity. It frames light as something impersonal. It lays itself across what happened — “what was said and what was heard” — without adjusting to human comfort.

This is the first discipline of the poem:

Truth is not emotional. It is structural.

The Position of the Speaker

The most decisive move occurs in the third stanza:

But I am not the thing that stands;

I am the mouth and I am the hands.

Truth stands.

The speaker does not.

This distinction matters.

The poem refuses to merge the self with the principle. The speaker does not claim to be truth. He claims to be the instrument through which it passes. That role is dangerous. Speech carries consequence. Once spoken, something repairs or something fractures.

Judgment is not about authority.

It is about cost.

The Seam

When I judge, I feel the seam

Tighten like a closing beam.

This image anchors the poem.

A seam is where two things meet.

It can hold.

It can split.

The speaker feels tension before pronouncement. Judgment is not casual. It is not rhetorical sport. It is pressure.

The poem does not condemn judgment. It recognizes its inevitability. But it demands internal exposure before outward declaration.

If truth is fire, it burns the speaker first.

That is the moral threshold.

Self-Stripping Before Speech

Let it first strip what I lean on.

This is the ethical center.

Before truth is applied to another, it must remove the speaker’s dependency, bias, posture, convenience. Judgment without self-stripping becomes performance. Judgment that does not cost the speaker becomes domination.

The poem rejects that.

It proposes something more severe:

Truth must be sharper than identity.

If the self survives untouched, the act was not honest.

The Refusal of Flattery

The light remains. It does not bend.

It does not flatter foe or friend.

This is not a sentimental morality. The poem does not offer compassion as substitute for clarity. It asserts neutrality of light.

The problem is not truth.

The problem is whether the speaker can withstand it.

What the Poem Ultimately Does

Judgment is a poem about responsibility.

It argues:

  • Truth exists independent of preference.

  • Speech creates structural consequence.

  • Judgment must wound the speaker before it wounds another.

  • Integrity requires separation between self and principle.

The poem is short because it must be.

Anything ornamental would weaken its severity.

It does not ask the reader to agree.

It asks the reader to measure the weight of their own speech.

And that is heavier than most of us admit.

Literary Analysis — Judgment

By The Critical Scribe

I. Structural Economy

Judgment is architecturally minimal. It relies on tight quatrains, disciplined rhyme, and short declarative lines. The brevity is intentional. The poem enacts what it argues: restraint.

The controlled rhythm reinforces the theme of containment. There is no excess diction, no ornamental metaphor. Every stanza advances the ethical argument without diversion.

This is moral compression rendered formally.

II. Light as Impersonal Constant

The poem opens with light not as symbol of hope, but as neutral exposure:

Morning does not ask what I prefer.

Light is indifferent. It does not consult the subject. It reveals.

This establishes the governing principle: truth precedes preference.

The poem never dramatizes divine intervention or cosmic spectacle. Instead, it locates judgment in daily recurrence. Morning is routine, not miraculous. This normalizes moral reckoning.

Truth is not event. It is recurrence.

III. The Separation of Principle and Self

The most important conceptual distinction appears in:

I am not the thing that stands;

I am the mouth and I am the hands.

Truth stands independently. The speaker functions as conduit. This distinction prevents moral self-identification. The poem refuses the collapse of person into principle.

This is critical.

Ethically, when the self merges with truth, judgment becomes authoritarian. By separating the speaker from the standing principle, the poem preserves humility within severity.

IV. The Seam as Ethical Pressure Point

The metaphor of the seam is central:

I feel the seam

Tighten like a closing beam.

A seam is both connection and fracture. It marks a boundary under tension.

Judgment operates at that boundary.

The tightening suggests consequence is immediate. Speech closes possibilities. Something mends or breaks. The poem does not romanticize this outcome. It presents it as structural reality.

Judgment is irreversible once spoken.

V. Internal Fire Before External Effect

The line:

If truth is fire, it burns through me

Before it sets another free.

introduces hierarchy of cost.

Authentic judgment requires internal exposure before external application. The speaker must endure the same fire he invokes. This removes hypocrisy from the act.

The poem establishes a moral sequence:

  1. Exposure

  2. Self-stripping

  3. Speech

Without step one, steps two and three become violence.

VI. The Refusal of Flattery

The closing assertion:

It does not flatter foe or friend.

eliminates partiality. Light is presented as non-relational. It does not bend toward affection or hostility. This is the poem’s final test: can the speaker endure a truth that does not validate identity?

The last line —

It must be sharper than my role.

— suggests that social position, persona, or reputation cannot dull truth’s edge.

Integrity requires sacrifice of self-image.

VII. Conclusion

Judgment is not about condemnation. It is about calibration.

It teaches:

  • Truth is independent of desire.

  • Speech has structural consequence.

  • Ethical judgment begins with self-exposure.

  • Integrity demands separation between identity and principle.

Form and argument align. The discipline of the poem mirrors the discipline it advocates.

Its severity is its coherence.

Al Konda

The Mythical Poet (Al Konda) is a Romanian-English poet whose work unites form and fire. He writes in rhyme and symbolism, insisting that poetry must sing, speak, structure, symbolize, strike, and bring joy—the pillars of The Konda Principle, his philosophy of the art. Across 40+ books and countless performances, Al has cultivated a living, multimedia poetry: each poem arrives with a literary analysis, an essay for readers, a song or duet, and visual art bearing his sigil.
His mythic epic The Seer – Deluxe Edition rekindles the ancient vocation of the poet as seer; A Name I Never Spoke and Flame Without Shadow explore love, devotion, and inner transformation; ongoing daily releases blend classical poetics with modern production—YouTube premieres, blog essays, and social dialogues that invite audiences to sing the poem.
Al’s stance is clear: craft is not a cage but a sanctuary; beauty is not a costume but a covenant. In an age of noise and spectacle, The Mythical Poet offers disciplined music, moral clarity, and the courage to turn sorrow into song.
